Venice is an incredable city in Italy, known as one of the most romantic places in the world, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. It dates back from about 1500 years and for long time it was a major trading post between the West and the East. Venice is built on over 118 islands and is world famous for its more than 150 canals, which serve as roads. The city is one of the biggest car free areas in Europe. Venice was constructed on wood piles and there are more than 400 bridges that connect the different parts of the city. In the 16th Century, Venice became a major musical and cultural centre in Europe with its Venetian polytonal style. Some of the most attractive landmarks in this magnificent city include the Basilica di San Marco, which is the mausoleum of the patron saint of the city. Very impressive is the Palazzo Ducale, where are established all the governing councils. Here can be seen some wonderful examples of the Italian Renaissance art, like Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, by Carpaccio, and the Scuola di San Rocco with works by Tintoretto.
